Runway 4-22 is the longest runway at Minneapolis International Airport -- about 11,000 feet long -- and it is used on occasion for the arrival and departure of heavy aircraft (e.g., B747) that require longer distances for landings or takeoffs.
C.S. McCrossan provided the 1400 LF cut-and-cover tunnel below runway 4-22. The tunnel is used by maintenance and safety vehicles to cross the airfeld without impacting live taxiways and the runway itself. 44,000 cubic yards of concrete 8 million lbs of reinforcing steel were needed to construct the tunnel.
